5 Best Current Restaurants in Mexico City

Anette Benitez

1. HUNAN

It could be argued that Hunan is the best Chinese restaurant in Mexico City. Grupo Hunan was founded in 1993 with the purpose of creating a unique culinary experience based on Chinese gastronomy. They decided to expand from only Chinese food and today they have more than 29 restaurants across Mexico including Sylvestre, Trastevere, Negroni, Lampuga, Nobu and Aida which are, in my opinion, all incredible.

Pollo Phoenix Peking Duck Merengue

Even though everything in the menu is delicious, these three dishes stand out without a doubt:

- The first is the “Pollo Phoenix”, delicious pieces of chicken topped with sesame seeds and sauteed in a special sauce which is to die for.

- If you are a duck lover the “Peking Duck” served with homemade crepes, chives, cucumber and plum sauce is without a doubt the freshest in Mexico.

- Lastly, like I always say and recommend to everybody, the best dessert in the country is the meringue with vanilla bean ice cream in the middle and freshly made strawberry sauce.

Hunan is the perfect restaurant for spending weekend evenings with your family, great service and exceptional food.

2. IKIGAI

Opentable

Ikigai, the Japanese word, refers to a passion that gives you joy and value to life. Grupo Ikigai presents an avant-guard vision in the Japanese gastronomic experience. It elevates the senses between deliciousness and quality of ingredients in the heart of Las Lomas de Chapultepec. Not only are there ingredients directly from Japan but also mixes the tastes of ingredients from New Zealand, Chile, the US and Alaska.

Huachinango Sashimi Maki Yorokobi Salmon Hand Roll

These are the three top dishes at Ikigai for sure.

-The freshly cut huachinango with cilantro leaves surrounding it, and a splash of a special sauce is extremely fresh.

-This is the best maki in the whole menu. It contains fresh salmon, cucumber, tempura, spicy sauce and eel sauce. It is a unique experience when eating it.

-And the classic hand roll with the freshest ingredients and top of the line special sauce.

I am sushi obsessed and can safely say that this is one of the best sushi restaurants in Mexico.

3. Trastevere

With the concept of haute Italian gastronomy located in Lomas de Chapultepec, Trastevere offers an unparalleled menu in which you can enjoy a luxurious atmosphere. It is capable of satisfying any appetite with their wide selection of dishes and selection of international wine. Claiming that their service and experience transports you to the Roman neighborhood known for its location across the Tiber River: Trastevere. Owned by Grupo Hunan it is without any doubt the best Italian restaurant in the city.

Truffle Pizza Artichoke Campellini Scampone

The best three dishes are the above.

  • The best truffle pizza there is with truffle spread and fresh truffle sprinkled at the moment it gets to your table.

  • Next the artichoke with a parmesan sauce and a hint of truffle as well. Its softness and flavor will forever surprise me.

  • Lastly, the Campellini Scampone with prawns and fresh cherry tomato sauce with white wine garlic and parsley.

A truly unique experience with amazing ambience and decoration. The closest you can get to authentic Italian food while in Mexico.

4. Mi Compa Chava

A complete sensation, Mi Compa Chava is the best seafood restaurant in Mexico City. It has a completely relaxed atmosphere, where you can easily go in with a hoodie and pants. There are two locations, one in Coyoacán and the other in Roma Norte. If you are going please be conscious that there will always be a line of at least 20 minutes but I promise it is worth the wait.

Aguachile Negro de Camarón Taquito Costra de Queso Chorreado de Coco

  • The aguachile from Topolopango (Sinaloa) has green chiltepin chili, with freshly sliced avocado on the side, onion and a special sauce. It is the perfect level between spicy and fresh.

  • Secondly, the Taquito Costra de Queso. When I tell you that this is the best seafood taco in the whole country I think many people will agree. It is filled with shrimp, beans and chipotle sauce, surrounded by a cheese crust on a fresh flour tortilla. The. Best. Quality.

  • they have a wide range of desserts but if you like coconut, the Chorreado de Coco with coconut ice cream made in the kitchen, burnt marshmallows and caramel sauce will blow your mind.

Perfect for a hot sunny day when you just don't feel like getting ready but still eat delicious food. It has great locations where after you are done eating you can enjoy a walk in La Roma or in Coyoacán.

5. Elia

Authentic and traditional Greek cuisine located in one of the most popular malls in Mexico, Arcos Bosques. In Greek, Elia translates to olive tree which is considered the main component in Greek gastronomy. Their open kitchen is complemented with an ice tub where fish and seafood is displayed, offering customers the opportunity to choose which fish they would like for dinner. The selection varies depending on the season, so you can enjoy a unique, personalized experience every time you visit. Elia seeks harmony between the calm atmosphere of the Mediterranean Sea together with the capitals of the world.

Gyro Elia Special Octopus

Next the three best dishes:

  • The classic Greek gyro can be ordered with pork, chicken or veal. It has the meat of your choice inside with crispy kale leaves, fresh tomatoes and crunchy french fries. With the classic tzatziki sauce inside wrapped around a delicious pita bread.

  • Second, the Elia special, paper thin zucchini and eggplants, lightly fried, with Saganaki cheese on the side and tzatziki sauce in the middle. It is a must.

  • Lastly, my favorite dish in the world, personally, the sashimi quality Mediterranean octopus, drizzled with fresh olive oil and charcoal broiled.

Elia is perfect for a dinner with friends, a reunion with family or just a typical Sunday when you want to be transported to a holiday Greece.

This was my personal list for my 5 top restaurants in Mexico City. My family and I have always been foodies. We literally base our trips off around the restaurants that we want to visit. With the mix of Chinese, Japanese, Italian, seafood and Greek that these restaurants are there is not one that is not worth visiting.
