Every year the MTV or VMA ceremony takes place either in late August or mid-September. This annual tradition started on September 14, 1981 as a way to celebrate the creativity of music videos, which were becoming a very important part of the music industry, and are a crucial piece of it today. There are twelve categories in which artists are nominated and voted by the public. There are also some technical awards. The trophy is the famous “Moonman”, a symbol of recognition, and though there is not a cash prize, winning does open many opportunities and has given artists a significant boost in their careers.

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards took place on September 11 at the UBS arena in Elmont, New York.

Many artists were nominated, but Taylor Swift took the spotlight with seven awards, the most of the night. She also had the most nominations with twelve, Followed by Post Malone who scored five wins and received eleven nominations. In fact, the top win of the night was a collaboration between them with the music video “Fortnight”.

With this, Taylor Swift has become the first artist to win five VMA awards, currently holding the record for the most “Best Music Video of the Year” wins for the videos Bad Blood” (2009), “You Need To Calm Down” (2019), “All Too Well: The Short Film” (2022), “Anti-Hero” (2023) and, of course, her collaboration with Post Malone, “Fortnight” (2024).
