“From Rags to Riches”: The Inheritance Games Series

Constanza Villela

“Riddles upon riddles, secrets upon secrets” (Barnes, The Inheritance Games)

There isn't a single phrase that could capture the magnetic draw people feel towards the Inheritance Games series, but if there were one that summarized the Hawthorne world it would certainly be this one.

The main character of the series is what appears to be an average girl whose world turns upside down. She enters the world of the Hawthorne family and realizes that nothing is what it appears to be.

The book begins when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves his family in the streets. That is somewhat of an overstatement,  but essentially he disinherits his entire family for Avery Kylie Grambs, a girl who at first glance appears to be a nobody. Avery is dragged headfirst into this absurd world she does not know the first thing about. She inherits a fortune of over 46 billion dollars and suddenly has the world at her feet, her wish becomes a command and her dreams a reality.

One of the many things that came with the fortune and legacy of the billionaire was his four magnetic grandsons. The four Hawthorne boys feel drawn to Avery for very different reasons. Nevertheless, two of them start paying closer attention to her from the moment she steps at Hawthorne house. She  gets caught between choosing Grayson and Jameson knowing that Grayson is the wrong choice but still feeling drawn to him, and there is just something about him she can't figure out. On the other hand, she is left falling for Jameson, a force to be reckoned with whose mind is set on winning Avery's heart.

The characters extraordinarily blend creating the family Avery never had and the one that the Hawthornes always wished they were a part of. This entire series is a masterpiece of literature, as the author plays with the words to create puzzles, clues, and mysteries that Avery and the Hawthorne brothers uncover as “the old man” pleases. Everything in the books is connected, and with astonishing attention to detail, Barnes crafts a world in which readers start thinking in a Hawthorne way.

The stakes have always been high but when money means power, everything is up for grabs and no one in the Hawthorne family gives up easily because remember: “there is nothing more Hawthorne than winning.” (Barnes, The Hawthorne Legacy)
