The 66th Annual Grammy´s

Anette Benitez

In the 66th Grammys artists made history with the addition of several new awards, women taking the lead and Miley Cyrus winning her first ever Grammy!

The new categories added to the Grammy´s this year were part of a larger set of amendments to make the voting process “more fair, transparent and accurate” , according to the Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. The Grammy process begins with members and record companies submitting entries which are screened for category placement. The Recording Academy voting members, all involved in the technical process of the recording process, then participate in a nomination that determines the 5 candidates for each category.

"Part of what was so beautiful for me to see on GRAMMY night was the respect and adoration that people of all ages and from all genres have for Billy Joel," Wexler says of Joel's 2024 GRAMMYs performance of their co-written "Turn The Lights Back On." They say to never meet your heroes but Freddy Wexler, a lifelong Billy Joel fan, did just that. The legendary Billy Joel performed his first song in 17 years “Turn the Lights Back On” at crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Joel was not up for any awards this year and hasn't been since 2002 where he was nominated alongside Tony Bennet for their duet “New york State of Mind”. However it is always a pleasure for the “Piano Man” to take the stage.

South African singer Tyla won the Inaugural Best African Music Performance Category. While Afrobeats and amapiano are certainly crossing all over America and Tyla´s win reflects how Western influence is often necessary to transcend in the continent. As the first winner of this award, Tyla made history.

Miley Cyrus is officially a Grammy winner! The singer kicked off the ceremony with a win for best pop solo for “Flowers” taking the stage to accept the award from Mariah Carey. She later took home the prize for best record of the year. Miley´s speech was concentrated on how meaningful this win is for her after working nearly 2 decades in the music industry without 1 single grammy win. She scored a total of six nominations this year including album of the year for “Endless Summer Vacation”.

This years Grammys did not disappoint and offered performances from Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Billy Joel .

CBS News

After seeing all of the fun and  entertainment on Grammy night, it is important to note the controversies and problems that have been reported under the surface about the event.  Chief executive, Deborah Dunghan has spoken for the first time since the Recording Academy put her on administrative leave. Speaking to ABC news she said: "I was trying at each step to take a deep breath and say, 'OK, I can make a difference, I can fix this, I can work with this team.'" In the ABC interview Dunghan further explained that the prestigious awards are “tainted” by conflicts of interest. “It's mostly white males that are in those rooms that make these decisions, and there's a conflict of interest," she said in a separate interview on CBS breakfast show This Morning.

Therefore the Grammy´s are just one more institution controlled by white men. Every single award has a conflict of interest behind it and often artists who deserve the recognition are left in the dark. The hope for the future is for more recognition for artists that have data to prove their success and for more representation in the board of people that vote in the awards.
