Matthew Baldwin ties 36-hole record to set fierce pace at BMW PGA Championship

England's Virginia Water (AP) — When he mishit a drive so horribly three weeks ago, Matthew Baldwin was laughing at himself because the ball fell between his legs and only moved one yard in front of the tee markings.
At the premier event of the DP World Tour on Friday, the English journeyman ranked No. 363 was leading the clubhouse after round by three shots, setting himself up for his greatest weekend yet.
At the BMW PGA Championship, Baldwin fired 6-under 66 to tie the tournament's 36-hole record and set an unusually fast pace at 13 under. It was difficult for many of Europe's best players, like Rory McIlroy, to get close to him.
It's quite the tale, considering Baldwin qualified for the tour in a stormy career that saw him compete on the Challenge Tour, which is a lower division of the DP World Tour, two years ago, he attended school six times and was ranked just within the top 850 worldwide. When he won his only professional race at the SDC Championship in South Africa last year, he was back on the main tour.
This year has presented some difficulties; in June and July, he “missed four straight cuts before starting to recover [his] form. In August, he tied for 12th place in the Czech Masters and then tied for 18th place at the British Masters, which is when he had that embarrassing moment off the tee.
When asked what he had discovered over his career's difficult periods, Baldwin replied, “There are more important things in life, I guess.”
“We are all here to try our hardest, at the end of the day. Sometimes I didn't give it my all. I'm enjoying what I'm doing and am in a good place physically and psychologically right now.”
After opening the round with a 65, Baldwin increased his lead to one stroke by making seven birdies, including five in six from the No. 3 hole, and a dropped shot at the No. 11 hole. So far this week, that has been his only bogey.
Regarding his approach this week, 38-year-old Baldwin stated, "Just playing sensible golf, really." I'm attempting to avoid hitting it too close, which naturally leads you to occasionally become cocky and do other stuff like that.
“I’ve been putting really well, which has kept momentum going.”
After making birdie on the last five holes on the West Course to finish with a bogey-free 65, Antoine Rozner of France was the closest contender to Baldwin.
About halfway through the second round, which was delayed by roughly 80 minutes due to rain and lightning around lunchtime, the No. 199-ranked Rozner was the only player on 10 under.
"To tell the truth, I've been having some trouble with my game, so this kind of round today was excellent," Rozner admitted.
The 2021 winner Billy Horschel shot 69, five shots behind Baldwin. One more blow to the back was Tommy Fleetwood (68).
After a first-round 67, the third-ranked McIlroy was one of the afternoon starters.
