Pedro Freiberg Exposition in Pedregal!

Camila Barona

Pedro Friedberg is a Mexican artist and designer born on January 11, 1936. He was born in Florence, Italy, and was the son of German Jewish parents. His family then moved from Europe to México at the beginning of the Second World War. He has been married 4 times and has children. He is most famously known for his surrealist paintings and sculptures with bright colors and lines. Most people know him for his hand chair sculpture. Freideberg has been known to always have been eccentric. He used to say that “art is dead”, because nothing new is being produced. Freideberg then studied architecture, but only made it to the third year, ase

hated how squared and symmetrical everything had to be in

architecture, and enjoyed drawing asymmetrical plans and impossible designs which ultimately led him to fail. Then he started to make these designs as art instead of architecture plans. He then met other surrealist artists and became a member of “Los hartos” in 1961 which means The Fed Up. This group of artists became known for rejecting social and political content in art. Up to that time the most popular artists would include political or social ideas into their paintings, they would try to portray a message. Friedeberg believed in art for art’s sake, meaning his works didn’t need to have a specific message or purpose. He didn’t want his art to be depicting social and political situations of the time, he just wanted his art to be new and aesthetically pleasing.

He is quite a popular artist, specially in Mexico In Pedregal there is an art exhibition featuring many of his small statues and paintings. The exhibition is in a beautiful restaurant called Tetelan, which has big colorful space glass ceilings, making the whole experience feel very fresh and open. This restaurant often pairs its food with art. Actually, throughout all of September and October they will feature Pedro Freideburgs works! Smaller versions of his famous hand chairs in different colors were also dispersed throughout. Other golden statues like this flying dog were featured, a intertwined chair greets you at the entrance and there is a separate room with white walls which contrasts with all the heavy colors and lines from the paintings that draw your eyes immediately.
