ASF, Sept.09-12, ¡Viva México y viva ASF! This month, Student Council presented itself to the student body for the first time in the 2024-25 school year, planning El Grito Week, celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day. This year’s festivities included exhilarating activities like the Elote Eating Competition, Marble Madness, Lotería, and Pin the Bigote on the Axolotl, along with the return of the Salsa Eating Competition for its second edition, continuing its legacy of spreading student gossip!

Uno, dos, tres, ¡empieza! The first event was the Elote Eating competition, which happened on the blacktop during lunch. One table, four generations, facing the crowd. Generations competed against each other, getting mayo and cheese all over their faces. The first person to finish would shout ‘done’ and that person would win. Each round, new contestants came up the stage, feeling brave and confident that they were going to win. Cheers were all over the table with people from each generation clapping for their own grade. First round, the seniors won. Then the sophomores, sometimes the juniors, and sometimes the freshmen. The first event was a success, bringing back the spirited bears.
One notable winner: Our dear Senior Brian Braun!
The second event was Marble Madness. The game’s rules were simple: roll the marble into tiny holes to gain points. Whoever gained the most points would be crowned the winner. The game was new to the Grito Week, and turned out to be a success. Enjoying Taco Tuesday, everybody was amused by their food and entertainment.
At this point, we were on the third day of the week, and games were all around! Lotería and Pin the Bigote on the Axolotl were waiting for you at the blacktop. People blindfolded, basketballs everywhere, and mustaches on the wrong wall! A vibrant atmosphere is created by the sun shining brightly, colorful banners fluttering overhead, and the sound of happy screams and lighthearted bantering, all of which invite you to get right in and create priceless memories.

Finally: last day before the puente. The Second annual Salsa Eating Competition has returned. Best tolerance and best response. Spicy and intense. The goal was to tackle the tough questions with the best responses to dodge the hot sauces. Like last year, our nominees came up the stage ready to answer some spicy questions made by their friends. This year though, not so easy. The heat increased while tolerance decreased. Mixing all sorts of hot sauce from all over the world, STUCO increased the level of spiciness this year. Questions like “What happened between you and the girl?” “Do you prefer (name) or (name)?” were asked and some were answered while others left the stage feeling the spicy salsa that STUCO made. “It felt like crying. This year’s salsas were intense,” said one of our students. Stuco has done their job.
